As we hit summer, we have to let go of our skincare essentials that got us through the winter months. While winter demanded loads of moisture and TLC for the skin, summer skincare gets even more tricky as your skin will need balanced nourishment, higher UV protection, sweat resistance and refreshing care. Read on to find out essential summer skincare tips to get you through the season.
Ditch the oils
You heard that right. Carrier oils and essential oils can wreak havoc on your skin during the summer. Carrier oils will make your skin look oiler and make it more prone to breakouts, whereas essential oils could disrupt the pH balance of your skin. Switch to gel-based products that feature essential oil extracts for a lighter and more suitable facial moisturiser.
During summer, you need to double up on sun protection by using a suncreen that offers a minimum of SPF 40 for both your face and body. It is also important to choose a formula that provides sweat resistance so that your skin stays fresh and non-greasy. If you spend more than two hours in the sun, reapply sunscreen to avoid skin damage. Even if you are going into the pool for a dip, get your hands on a waterproof sunscreen and apply it 30 minutes before you get into the water.
While using sunscreen is important, taking further precautions to stay protected from the harsh sun is ideal. Use a scarf or a hat when you step out and keep an aloe vera soothing gel in case you get easily sunburned.
Find a face wash that multi-tasks! The ideal face wash should gently cleanse your skin by removing pollutants, makeup, and tan whilst keeping your skin balanced and refreshed.
Give your skin some TLC by choosing a refreshing toner for the summer. Avoid toners that have high contents of alcohol as it will be harsh on your skin and disrupt the balance. Choose natural toners such as rose water or cucumber water that will gently tone your skin and keep it soft.
Keep a gentle face mist in your bag to refresh your skin anytime, anywhere.
Look for energising ingredients in your shower gels and body scrubs such as peppermint, lavender, orange and so on. Such body washes will help you stay fresh and fragrant for longer.
The harsh sun will also make your lips dry and dehydrated. It is as important to keep your lips protected from the sun as is your skin. Look for lip balms that offer UV protection or natural ingredients that are known to protect the skin from the sun like carrot seed oil, almond oil, shea butter and so on.
