Even when you are trying your best, you may feel like you are not able to give enough time and attention to your child.
If your work requires you to travel between cities or countries, you may find yourself tired all the time, jet-lagged or just too drained to interact with your child after the travel. By the time you gain your energy back, it is often time to leave for the next work trip. This can lead to a disconnect between you and your child, which can not only harm your relationship with him/her but also have an impact on their mind and insecurities may creep in. Here is how you can avoid it.
Be healthy yourself
If you eat right and sleep right even when you are on work trips, you can come home energetic and fresh to spend some quality time with your child. Avoid fatty, oily food and eat healthily. Follow a proper sleep pattern and stick to it, no matter what. A little effort on your health will prove beneficial not just for your long-term well being, but also for your relationship with your child.
Note down your plan for the week or the day, and plan at least one fun activity to do with your child. It doesn’t have to be very elaborate – just a nice movie date with homemade popcorn or a drive to his/her favourite ice cream place is more than enough to make them feel connected to you.
Send them pictures
When you are away, show them every little thing you are doing. Thanks to technology, it is now possible to remotely even have meals together! Send them pictures of your stay, your food, places you visit, what you wear and see what they have to say about it. Not only does it give you a good topic for conversation, but it also helps them stay connected to you better.
Bring them souvenirs
It is not about the materialistic value of the gift but the fact that your child feels you remembered him/her even when you were away. If you give them a souvenir from every place you go to, they will feel a sense of connecting with you and get a feeling like they were with you on each of those trips. It doesn’t have to be very expensive again – a fridge magnet or a key chain would do.
Leave behind something to remember you
When you go on a trip, you can leave them something behind. It could be a topic of discussion that you want them to read about by the time you come back so you both can have a debate on it, a movie to watch or just a skill to master. Not only will this help your child in learning new things, but it will also ensure your participation in the activity.
